How to Make Collage Picture Frames with Kids

A special someone's birthday is coming up and you've been wondering what your kids can get them as a present… Well, the best gifts don't always have to be expensive! In fact, something handmade often feels more special to the recipient – especially if your kids have taken the time to create a unique work of art!

Collage picture frames are an easy and fun solution, which is why we've put together some simple instructions and lots of ideas on how to craft picture frames for kids. How to Make Picture Frames

Making picture frames with kids couldn't be easier! All you need is the following:

  • Thick cardboard – the front or back of an old cereal box is a good option
  • White glue
  • A pencil
  • A photo
  • Wool or string
  • Stapler
  • Paint and collage materials (beads, buttons, pasta etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Cut your cupboard to the size you would like the frame to be. Then, place your photo in the middle of the cardboard and draw around the outside with a pencil. Now you have the outline for the border of your frame.
  2. Turn the cardboard over. Cut a small length of wool or string; form it into a loop; then, staple it to the top of the cardboard in the middle to form a picture hook. Make sure the loop is securely attached – apply sticky tape if necessary – as collage frames can sometimes be heavy and you wouldn't want it to fall from the wall and break!
  3. Turn the cardboard back to the right side and then decorate the border with any of the ideas below. Be sure to keep within the lines of the border.
  4. Depending on how you plan to decorate the frame, you might want to apply a base layer of paint first. Allow this to dry before gluing anything on.
  5. Once your frame is decorated, stick your photo on and you’ve got yourself a homemade picture frame!

If you'd prefer not to make your own frame, you can buy a cheap wooden version from a hardware or craft store instead, and decorate it in the same way.  collage picture frames

Collage Picture Frame Ideas

The great thing about collage picture frames is that you can decorate them any way you want! A pasta picture frame is great for toddlers as they can practise their fine-motor skills by gluing on fancy pasta shapes. Older kids might want to try more intricate mosaic techniques. Or you could even turn the border of your picture frame into a collage of family photos surrounding the main photo – a great gift idea for a grandparent. There are lots more ideas for collage picture frames on Pinterest too. Here are some of our favourite decorative materials to choose from:

  • Multi-coloured buttons
  • Drift wood
  • Coloured wool or ribbons sewed through with a darning needle
  • Torn up glossy magazines
  • Coloured foil mosaics
  • Paper flowers
  • Scrunched up tissue paper
  • Lego bricks
  • Coloured sand or glitter
  • Straws
  • Pipe cleaners
