Coin Magic: How to Do the Vanishing Coin Trick

The mystery of magic amazes kids, especially when they’re younger, so an offer to teach them how it actually works will go down a treat.

How about showing them some simple coin magic tricks to begin with? This vanishing coin trick for kids involves some preparation to make your magical equipment, but doesn’t take long to master.

The Vanishing Coin Trick: Preparation

You will need:

  • 2 sheets of paper of the same colour
  • A handkerchief
  • A clear glass
  • A coin
  • A pencil
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Turn the glass upside down on top of one of the sheets of paper, and trace the rim.
  2. Cut out the circle. Be sure to supervise any little ones when using scissors.
  3. Next, glue the circle onto the mouth of the glass. Only use a small amount of glue, otherwise the runny liquid will end up down the sides of the glass and give the trick away.
  4. Once the glue is dry, you’re ready to begin.

The Secret Behind the Vanishing Coin Trick

The paper circle is glued to the bottom of the glass so that when the trick is performed, the glass can be placed over the coin.

Because the trick is performed on top of a piece of paper of the same colour, the secret paper circle then hides the coin without being detected. Coin magic tricks like this are best for younger children, as the older they are, the more likely they are to work out the secret.

Performing this trick for a younger brother or sister is a great idea if your child really wants to impress – of course, admiring grandparents, aunts, and uncles are sure to be amazed too!

The Performance

Now you know the secret, and have your magical tools ready, it’s time for your little magician to get started.

  • Firstly, your child will need to place the second piece of paper on a table and put the glass upside down in the middle, with the coin next to it.
  • Now it’s time for them to perfect their most theatrical magician voice and announce that they are going to make the coin disappear – the more dramatic they sound, the better!
  • They then cover the glass with the handkerchief, and move it on top of the coin (the handkerchief will stop anyone from seeing the paper cover the coin).
  • Pull off the handkerchief, and ta-da! The coin will have disappeared. Once the audience has applauded your child in amazement, they can make the coin reappear by covering the glass again and moving it away. Voilà! The coin will have returned.

Hints for Coin Magic Tricks

  • This is one of the simplest easy coin tricks to teach, as all your child has to do to perfect the illusion is make sure that no one sees the bottom of the glass.
  • Once they’ve finished the trick, make sure they don’t give the secret away by letting the audience see the bottom of the glass! Your little magician will need to quickly put it away and start a new trick. For more fun magic for kids, check out these card tricks.
