Finding the Best Laundry Detergent for Your Sensitive Skin: A Guide

If you have sensitive skin, you’re probably all too familiar with the feeling of reacting to something you’re wearing: itchiness and flare-ups are only the beginning of the story. Luckily, this problem is often avoidable with a few simple steps. So how do you choose the right clothes and fabrics to wear, or find the best washing powder for sensitive skin? Let’s see…

How can I protect my sensitive skin with the clothes I wear?

Before we get to choosing the right washing detergent for sensitive skin, let’s talk fabrics. Are certain fabrics better for sensitive skin than others? Well, yes and no – everybody’s skin is different, so the fabrics that work for someone else with sensitive skin might not work for you. That said, there are a few general rules that might help you to choose the right clothes for your sensitive skin:

  1. Keep it light. Stick to soft, breathable fibres where you can – cotton, silk, and viscose are generally considered the top three skin-friendly fabrics. Cotton is a good choice for summer, as it’s a light, natural fibre that lets your skin breathe. For cooler weather, silk is probably the most skin-friendly option, but you could also try wearing a long-sleeved cotton or viscose shirt under woollen or acrylic garments to help you stay warm and protect your skin at the same time.
  2. Keep it loose. Tight-fitting clothing that sits close to your skin all day is more likely to cause irritation. Avoid fabrics like nylon and Lycra, which are designed to cling to your skin, and opt for looser clothing instead.
  3. Avoid fabric dyes. If your skin is very sensitive, the dyes used on some fabrics can cause irritation. If you just can’t give up bright colours and bold prints, try wearing an undyed cotton shirt underneath your more vibrant tops.

Finally, remember that everyone is unique. If you’re comfortable in your current clothes and you already have a good detergent for sensitive skin, keep doing what you’re doing!

What’s a good laundry detergent for sensitive skin?

Although your washing machine does a great job of rinsing laundry detergent out of your clothes at the end of the wash, a little detergent is normally left behind in the fibres. This is usually harmless, but some detergents contain ingredients that can irritate more delicate skin – including, in some cases, the stain-busting enzymes in biological washing powder.

That’s why Persil non-bio is a good detergent for sensitive skin – it’s tough on stains but gentle next to skin, so you can wash without fear. Our skin care research has even been recognised by the British Skin Foundation.

Is non-bio better for sensitive skin?

Biological detergents don’t always cause skin irritation, so if it’s not causing your skin any problems, there’s no need to switch immediately. If you are looking for the best washing detergent for sensitive skin, though, non-bio detergents are a good place to start.

Whether you use powder, capsules, tablets or liquid is up to you – some people think that washing liquid dissolves more easily, while others maintain that dosing is easier with powder. It all comes down to what works best for you and your skin. Why not check out Persil’s range of non-bio products to start with?

And that’s everything you need to know about sensitive skin, washing powder and more! There’s no need to worry about managing delicate skin – as long as you have the right information at hand, keeping sensitive skin happy is a breeze.
